Fire Emblem Universe _ News & Announcements _ Hacking Section Now Open to Guests

Posted by: Arch is on vacation! May 10 2010, 05:12 AM

For quite some time we have locked the Hacking Section of our forums to members, preventing guests from viewing the content within. Originally, the move was designed to increase our activity and get new members. This plan has not only been wildly unsuccessful, it has backfired; creating a negative view of FEU as a group of hoarders. It has created inconvenience for our existing members who access the forums through different mediums. It has also created inconvenience for our staff as people who would not normally register and post spam in order to gain access to the hacking information. It was a poorly crafted idea and tonight that restriction has been removed.

Carry on.

Are we to conclude, then, that the measure marking new members as potential bots has been removed as well?

Posted by: Arch is on vacation! May 10 2010, 05:39 AM

No, why would you conclude that? People who actually wish to use the forums will post a real introduction. People who want to raid our hacking section will just spam. That measure is not the problem.

Right. Most people who want to read the hacking section only will make shitty intro posts and then never post again. Now they don't even have to make an account. People who do want to make an account can introduce themselves and be social, which shouldn't be hard if they truly want to be a member. And on top of all that, any bots that want to make an account are bots. Bots doesn't smart enough to post an intro. Any spammers that manually register will be forced to expose themselves too.

Well really IMHO, being able to view the hacking section when they registered would make the "members" in the first place...

The hacks they'd make will probably consist of simple nightmare edits and switching around some names.... maybe... So the "quick" hacking info isn't gonna give them the ability to do what they've seen in other's hacking videos...

If they want to make what I think is a worthwhile hack with the information available to them, they'd actually participate in the community, ask questions, etc.

They might have the tools, but without actually trying it out themselves, experimenting, asking questions, etc. they're not probably gonna go very far until they get bored...

So I say the decision to let guests access the info is a good idea ._.

It saves on the spam intro threads, as well as maybe "space" for the form that would have been taken up if those members that would have registered for the info and then disappear would be saved, but then no one is really gonna notice that...

^Amazingly enough it seems like the people who get the farthest in hacking ask the least questions

Idk why

Anyway good to know you made this change Arch. Now I don't hate FEU anymore.

Probably because the only thing anyone ever asks is stuff we've already answered. The good hackers just look for it.

The odds of being the first to do a thing are incredibly slim with billions of people walking around.

Hmm, that's a really good point. Nicely said.

lol, I could have sworn this had a lot to do with hackers complaining about not getting enough direct attention or something. Good move, either way.
